740 GLE Transmission Problem 700 1988

I just purchased a 1988 740 GLE with 156,000 miles. I've taken it to a reputable, local Volvo shop for a checkup. They did an inspection and replaced a couple of seals. The one problem, which was known at purchase, was that the overdrive (electronically enabled) was not functioning. The guys at the shop ascertained that the problem was mechanical and internal to the tranny. They could not refer me to a reputable transmission shop. After checking around, I found what I thought to be a reputable place. They now have my transmission in pieces and are kindly requesting $2,400 to put everything right. Am I wrong in not giving this option even a moment's consideration? What are my best options? ANY advice would be helpful at this point. I am a poor graduate student who just wants the best, most economical solution in getting my already beloved first Volvo back on the road. Best regards.
