760 Turbodiesel 700

Just bought a 1983 760 GLE Turbodiesel in great running condition. I was told by the former owner that he doesn't know when the Timing Belts were last changed. He hasn't owned it too long. It has 180,000 miles on the clock. I'm planning to drive this car 250 miles to get it home.

I've seen the check for Timing Belts off the car, by bending it back and looking for cracks. Is there a way to check the condition of the Belts still fitted on the car?

Being this is an interferance engine, I'm nervous of not knowing the condition of these belts. And might tow it using a Towing Dolly.

This brings up another question. The car has the ZF Automatic, does the Driveshaft have to be disconnected to tow safely?

Thanks
