why is it so loud? 200

I have a 1978 244DL. It's my daily driver and it has 147,000 miles. It has developed a low rumble in the back that gets extremely loud between 45-55 mph. It is loud whether or not I am accelerating, but it does not do it if I put the car in neutral and rev the engine. The car is still shifting smoothly and it does not seem to be hesitating. The rumbling is accompanied by a vibration (not severe). I'm hoping that it's not a transmission problem. With any luck I'm going to get it to a shop this week, but do you have any ideas about what the problem may be? Could it be something with the tires, or possibly the exhaust?
Peace,
Sarah from Maine
