1987 240 DL...one more problem...A/C

One more thing I have an issue with is the a/c. It didn't have a knob on it since I got it, and I turned the "thingie" with a pair of locking pliers and it didn't do anything, but it is hard as heck to turn. It's almost like it's stuck or something. Has anyone else had an issue similar to this that can share the remedy? I would love to have a/c come summer time if it is something I can fix myself. Thanks!
