exhaust - how much of it do you really need? 700

the following is STRICTLY a hypothetical question. i am not suggesting that i plan to or recommend doing anything mentioned....

could a person feasibly just cut the exhaust off before the muffler and run a straight pipe to the rear? i *ahem* "heard" of it being done before, to an older bmw 528e and an older nissan maxima, with good results.

i guess it comes down to: a) would there be any performance issues related to doing this? b) just how loud do you reckon it would be?

i am cheap. so was my 1986 volvo 740gle. i wouldnt consider putting on an exhaust costing more than $50 or so, and mine is rusted out back there. plus, some extra ponies freed up is always good, and straight pipes sound mean (should a volvo sound mean?) also, vehicles dont get inspected where i live.

thoughts? comments? hate mail? (hey, relax. it's a beater even if it's adorned with volvo badges)
