1996 960 model: Secondary Air Injector Malfunctioning 900

I have purchased 1996 960 model 3 months ago. This car has about 93000 miles on it. I recently had the oil changed at the Jiffy Lubes. I took it to the Firestone mechaninc (he worked at a volvo dealership before) when the check engine sign was lit on. The mechanic tried but couldn't find anything so he just erased the code. After running it for another 2000 miles the engine sign lit again. I am not sure about the code error # but it read "Secondary Air Injector Malfunctioning". Currently I have the code erased. I think this reduces the burning of the fuel. I am not sure though. Can can someone tell me the implications of this problem and how much it cost to fix this problem. I appreciate your response and help. Thank you in advance.
