Gas mileage 200 1985

my 85 240 Dl is horrible on gas mileage. my exhaust is broken at muffler, does that have some thing to do with it? also brakes are squeaking bad both front and rear, i just 2mths ago changed front and not long ago the back, whats up with it? much appreicated info if possible
