Hi Ted -

Did you get to Houston? We got away on our Maryland trip, 10/14 thru 10/22.

By the "gate box" on the exhaust manifold I think you mean what I call the heat shield. Bolts onto the manifold with four bolts, is comprised of two pieces with the pre-heat tube connected to the bottom piece.

Unless your state emission/safety test requires it, and unless you want preheated air into the engine on cold mornings, you can do quite well without it.
