Car will not start 1986 740 turbo

Car tried to turn over then now nothing. battery fine, fuel relay new, starter fairly new... when I was turning the key I did notice some "smoke" coming from under the hood, smelled like anti-freeze. It seemed to be coming from the starter, (above) where the lead runs from the pos. term. on the battery... Checked connection, they are fine. Car just doesn't seem to be getting enough of a boost. Is there a regulator or something that could affect the current going to the starter? I have been having problems with my ignition switch, too many things happening at once getting confused as to where to start. Any idea?

I may not know all the lingo, but I work quite a bit on my car & am always willing to learn. I have owned my B230 for 11 years, 365K, just give it to me in laymen terms and I will figure it out. I just need a course of attack to resolve problems logically. Anyone?
