This is quite time consuming and it is tough to get it back together looking good.
First Open doors and remove inside kick panels - Bolst for front fenders are in there. Then remove bolts along engine bay, then take out batter and batter tray and you will see the seam. the bolst are visble from underneath. I've had to melt off the uindercoating to get a grip on the bolts and EVERYTIME one of more of those dang bolts is so rusted that I round off the heads and have to cut or grind it out....
there are more bolts behind/ under the radiator.
You CAn remove the center section by it's self... there is a three piece sandwich at the joint. the inside of the engine bay, the fender and the front center section. It a BEAR to get it back together even with the fenders off.
Three alternate ideas.
1) Take off tranny from the underneath (duh..)
then lift the engine up as far as you can and prop it carefull in place with a secondary support. Then you can shorten the chains and pull the oil ban over the front section and probably clear your ceiling hight.
2)Rig up a gantry out of 4x4 posts and a 4x4 cross piece. I've done this with great success. Use the garage to hold the pieces in place.. but all the weight of the lift gets transfered down the posts to the floor.
Verticall posts have a V notch in the top to carry the horizontal beam that is resting point down on the vertical posts. Using this gantry you can lift up the engine then take off the front wheels and lower the car all the way down and slide / roll the shell out of the way to put the engine on a stand or floor.
3) Disconnect all of the engine stuff then lift up on the engine to take the weight off ( a little ) then disconnt the 4 bolts that hold the BIG cross member to the frame. They are big bolts but often come out easily unless it a rusty shell. Then after you clear away the steering box and or tie rods that are in the way and maybe trans coller lines and or maybe sway bar, you can lower the car to the ground (wheels off) and then lift the shell up and the engine and cross member will stay on the ground. You might still ahve a clearance problem.. but it's a lot of fun to take on out this way :<>)
good luck
