Dash cap installation 1800 1967

Hi Everyone,

My '67 S has one of those plastic upper dash (replacement) caps and it's wasn't particularly well installed. The PO installed it over the defroster vents leaving the trim pieces in place. Many of the vent openings in the cap don't line up that well with the actual vent openings and so not that much air actually gets through. Defrosting/defogging capability is quite diminished as a result.

I've removed the cap and want to re-install it - correctly. I've loosened off the 6 or so bolts securing the entire dash assy in place so now I'm able to slide the dash cap further forward and this will enable me to properly align the vent holes in the cap with the defrosters.

But being the perfectionist I am, I want to remove the trim pieces that surround the defroster vents first and put them back on over top the new dash cap.

Has anyone ever accomplished this without removing the windshield ? If so, how
was it done ?

I'm thinking that if I undo all the bolts securing the dash assy in place, I may be able to move the thing far enough away from the windshield or drop it down enough to give me enough room to remove the screws holding the vent rings in place and then screw them back in once the dash pad has been secured in place. Does this have a possibility of working ? Has anyone ever tried it ?

What are the pitfalls of doing this and what do I need to be mindful of if I do
decide to give this a try ?

Any tips/pointers would be greatly appreciated.
