The main thing that most people look for when buying a classic Volvo is rust. Now I know I am going to stir up a little dust here, but when I look at a classic car I prefer to see an older paint job. That will help me determine the condition of the body much easier. New paint can hide all kinds of problems. Now the average "Joe" looking at a used car wants to see pretty paint, so a new paint job is recommended.
The mechanicals on the older Volvos are pretty bullet proof, but just make sure is starts easy and drives correctly. Interior stuff is replaceable so as long as everything is there and in OK condition you shouldn't have a real problem.
Bottom line... If the car has a rust problem it will probably be worth less than $1,500 to someone who knows classic Volvos. With a good body and decent mechanicals, look for somewhere around $2,000 to $4,500. For really nice daily drivers the price can bump up as high as $7,000. And then for a show quality example you could be looking upwards of $10,000.
