Low temp on temp guage 900

You could measure the resistance of the coolant temp sensor and compare it with the resistance table.

32ºF - 7300 Ohms; 68ºF - 2800 Ohms; 176ºF - 300 Ohms; 212ºF - 150 Ohms.

You could also clip lead a 150 Ohm resistor in to the harness side while you're there and see if the gauge reads about 5/8ths full scale as it should.

By that time you should know if the problem is the thermostat or not. Replacing the thermostat every couple of years is still a good idea in any event. You might do it while you're checking the sensor/gauge function as it is right there.
