1987 240DL short/ground issue?

Hi -

Yeah, well that was a long one - but your problem is apparently complex.

First the headlights. There is a relay that allows the headlights to be on only when the key is in position I or II, engine running or not. Nice feature, methinks, but be careful NOT to leave on just the parking lights, they'll stay on even if the key is in your purse. BTDT (wifemobile dead at wife's work.)

Fuse #8 covers the courtesy lighting that comes on with the key out. Glove box, engine bay light, trunk light, dome light, clock, central locking, and power antenna - if equipped. In fact, Fuses #6..7...8..9..10 are all powered direct from the battery, no key required.

So if you have Fuse #8 blow, it's gotta be one of those things. Glove box light glowing means something was drawing voltage and finding its ground through that bulb. Weird, I know.

Why Fuse #8 would blow when the headlights are turned on is a real stumper. Somewhere some wire is touching something it shouldn't.

What about the headlights when you use the flashers? Do they work? Does that blow the fuse? Oh - whenever you visit a boneyard, strip the fuses out of any 240 you find. Makes this kind of fault tracing a lot cheaper. You may find a way to connect a 12 volt light across Fuse #8, and take the fuse out. Turn on the headlights and if the test light goes on, the fuse would have blown.

Lastly - what happened to the glove box door? Hinges broke off? If yes, that's a bone yard item. Get a box from 1983-87, and your door and hinge pins will fit fine.

Good Luck,

Bob
