speaker fader 200

Hey all, just replaced a non working aftermarket radio in upper dash of my 88 wagon with a new cd system. Rear speakers work fine, but fronts don't work. Did not work with the old system either and I know I have it wired up correctly to the wiring harness.
Whats this fader switch in the control panel by the A/C controls for? Turning the knob does not seem to have any affect. Are all my speaker wires going thru that device and it is the culprit? or can I eliminate it somehow?
Help! I'm blasting my kids out in the back seat trying to hear the radio:)
