Another 'new' 740T owner 700

Hi folks,

I've been lurking and reading the archives, and there's a wealth of info here. Great site!

I just took possession of a 1986 740 Turbo, 4 speed manual w/OD, with >144k miles on it. The previous owner said that the overdrive switch on the shift stick "broke" and they never bothered to fix it. Since I've owned it, I've noticed that the car pops out of fourth gear intermittently.

I put the car in fourth, turned the ignition to the first position and clicked on the button. I didn't hear the relay click, and after looking behind the ashtray, determined that the OD relay was missing. Upon further inspection, it turns out that the relay is there. This weekend I plan to pull the fuse tray out and replace the relay.

There is another problem that cropped up regarding the transmission: it frequently pops out of second gear.

I don't hear any grinding and it otherwise seems to shift smoothly. Any ideas on what the problem might or how serious it might be?

Oh, and the fuel gauge wasn't working when I bought it (and hadn't for a while according to PO), but a well-placed tap on the dashboard has it working now ;-)

Thanks is advance.

Joe
