catalytic converter in 1982 240 dl 200 1982

Ooops I think I have posted an empty message ! here it goes!

Is it possible that a 1982 carburetted North american 240 asssembled in Halifax have two resonators and a muffler but no catalytic converter.
One that I am thinking of buying has something that looks like a catalytic converter where the cat sits on more recent 240s there is no O2 sensor visible the muffler shop where I had it inspected says that it is a resonator and are asking for more than 2210$ to change it becauseit is broken where the down strem pipe connects. They say its not a cat " If so do I really need it it seems that a straight pipe woud be cheaper.
