Intermittent whine/Howl

Hey everyone,
My 1989 240dl 180km (CDN) has developed a intermittent whine/howling noise. Recently I had the car in the shop and told them about it suspecting a bad wheel bearing. The mechanic said the bearings were good and that he thought the noise was transmission related with the noise being amplified through the hollow drive shaft. Does this sound like a center drive shaft support bearing that has gone? Any information would be great.

thank-you
