When an AMM goes south?? 700

When the AMM goes bad does it happen all at once or can it deteriorate slowly over time. I've had this stumbling idle now for awhile. Today I pulled the AMM connector and noticed that the engine stumbles just like the bad idle only it's more pronounced. The car runs great except for the idle problem. Could the AMM be working when it's sucking alot of air through it and then just sort of half working when at idle when there is a lowered air flow?
