'85 245DL loses power but rarely stalls. 200 1985

Hi - I'm new to this site and very excited about what I've read so far. I hope someone can help with this problem!

My 85 245DL will, without warning lose power, but not stall. It does stall on rare occassion. I can't seem to diagnose the problem because there is no set pattern. It happens when it is cold or hot, upon acceleration from a stop and while in the middle of shifting. Occassionally I can tell that it is struggling to maintain full power while I am at highway speeds.

This car was given to us and I am not sure of it's previous maintenance history. I do know that it had a little accident - the front end ran into and on top of a fire hydrant. My husband replaced the front grille and bumper. Other than that, there was no appearant damage. It does have a medium sized oil leak, possibly from the head gasket. I add about 1/2 quart every other week or so.

One major concern is the timing belt cover. It looks warped, with an obvious gap of about a 1/4 inch between the back piece and the front cover. Several "mechanics" have stated that it won't have an effect on the way it runs. ?? Do I need to replace the housing and where do I find one?

As for the power loss - is it the fuel filter, fuel pump, a relay, or the computer? I am a pretty good home mechanic once I know what the problem is, but this one has me stumped! Thanks in advance for the input.
