handbrake cable broken at lever, can I simply replace metal barrel? 700 1988

I have an 88 760, and a while back I pulled hard on the handbrake and the cable broke. Upon inspection, it turns out that the cable broke at the end, where the small (say, 1/4" diameter by 1/2"long) metal barrel is that connects the cable to the lever. (This reminded me of what you see on a bicycle brake cable, actually. Very similar.) Is there a way to replace the metal barrel at the end of the line? Otherwise I'll have to replace the whole cable which seems like it would take a whole lot longer. In the event that I do have to replace the whole cable, can someone point me in the direction of a good faq for this? My hayne's manual is terrible (I boke part of the center console because it didn't mention two bolts at the very front, hidden under trim) and I've looked around brickboard but haven't yet found what I need.
Thanks!
