Factory CD changer problems 900 1993

The factory CD changer that came with my recently purchased '93 944T acts strangely. It loads the CD's fine (I am using audio CD's only, no CD-R's or other formats) but then the CD only plays for a few minutes and quits (no sound). I can have it eject that CD and start another, but then the new one does the same thing. If I use the selector knob or the CD number button to restart the CD, it will restart. I can also use the selector knob to advance to another song, but usually within minutes it will lock up again. Anybody else have this happen? Is there a fix, or is the changer trash? Thanks.
