Actually, no... that *should* work well. Interesting that you found it doesn't...

In the worst case (your scrub radius being ... I forget which is correctly called positive/negative, for now let's say 'inverted') what will happen is your bump steer will try to correct itself. Most cars built 85-on are this way. If the geometric point of rotation for steering is outside the wheel centerline/contact patch center, when you hit a bump the steering will pull the opposite way.

A friend building an Ultima (http://www.ultimasports.co.uk) with a BMW 750il motor (poor man's Maclaren... err, well these things are relative) made up his own spindles and wheels from billet to correct just this issue.

Hot rod/street rod builders are just now realizing that some (not all) factory '35-'80 suspensions can be made to work well. What the geometry doesn't like is to have the wheelwheel filled by spacing outward of the wheel. Best to widen the cross member, and use a 'fwd' type offset.
