battery draining 140-160 1971

my problem seems kind of odd and im not sure what it could be. about 2 weeks ago the alternator died and it drained the batterey. well i ended up getting a new alternator. when i put it in i had to jump start the car because the battery had died. well when it got runniong i let it charge and then i took a reading on the batterys voltage it read 14 which is normal. so i assumed every thing was ok and good. the next day i came out to start my car and it was completely dead. i jumped it again let it charge and took another reading 14 again. then i came out side latter that day to start it and well guess what ...dead...again. another odd thing is that when the key is out of the ignition and switched off the amp light is on even though we got a new alternator, but when its running the amp light is off. i have no idea what this could be if some one could help me out it would be great. thanks
