wrench size for O2 sensor 200 1989

Fault codes tell me Oxygen sensor on my '89 240, 132K miles. I want to try taking it out and cleaning it because hope springs eternal. Besides wanting $200 for a new one, local parts dealer says ALL O2 sensors are 7/8 inch and I should buy his removal socket. I tried my SAE crescent wrenches and 7/8 seems just a little too big, and 13/16 too small. I Don't have metric crescents (yet) and I don't want to strip it, so presuming it's original, does anyone know what size wrench is right ? 21mm ? Any advice on removing and possibly restoring this sensor ? I will buy one from Groton if I must. Thanks.

Andy - 89 240 132Kmi, 91 740 182Kmi, (87 240 225Kmi lost the rust battle).
