142e not charging, HELP! 140-160

Well, I double checked the alternator wires, my amp light works fine. stays off or only very dimly lit while running, as does my 142s that runs and charges fine. I did double check my little guage i had hooked up, with lights on, it leans to discharge. I am wondering could it be a fualty voltage regulator? I was under the impression that the regulator was built-in or is on the alternator? or does it look similar to a relay?

Also, I dont have a multimeter or anything to check voltage with, tho i will have to pick one up because sometimes, fixing things by accident gets old heh
