oil leak 200 1998

Greetings,
I have a 240GL w/145K mi. that just started leaking oil apparently from the rear main about a month ago. There is dripping between the bell housing and oil pools inside the housing. No external leaking observed. It seems more prominent after highway driving as opposed to around town (<45mph). My concern is that something is causing pressure internally and caused the seal to fail. Replacing the seal may just cover the symptom and not fix the problem. I cleaned the flame trap (it wasn't clogged) but it didn't make a difference. I'm not familiar with how the oil separator functions and how it could be tested. Plus, a reputable repair shop told me that he rarely sees bad rear seals on these Volvos. Anyone ever encounter any similar problem. Thanks.
