My D6 940 GL TDIC scrap it or keep it 900 1993

Hello everyone,

I just want to start off and say I think this board is great, lots of good help and info. Well I bought this volvo a few months back thinking it would be awsome for trips and stuff but starting to change my mind about it. Im not really a mechanic although I would love to be, but Im willing to get my hands dirty and do anything I think Im capable of. The cars got 200000 Km on the motor. So far Ive replaced rotors, pads, lines and put some rims on the car. The motor however is starting to need some help. First off it smokes bad, black smoke, especially when the car hits about 3k RPM, about the time the turbo kicks in. Second it sounds like the valves are knocking really loud. Im not for sure its the valves from what Ive read on other poeples knocking problems but its way to loud either way. When I did my first oil change I noticed a few things that needed help. One my oil pan screw was stripped in. That means I need a new oil pan right? Can the oil pan on the D24TIC be removed without overhaul? Second was oil leaking from somewhere on the turboside of the motor. I noticed an oil line going to the turbo. I think its an oil cooler cause i seam to have multiple radiators on the front of the car but not sure. The mechanic there said the motor sounded like it was loosing compression while it was running. I really dont know what that means.

So heres the plan I was gonna try and replace all of the following: valves, oil pan, valve cover gasket, injectors, main seal, rear seal, seals in the turbo. Its kinda a list of everybodies opinion on whats wrong with the motor. Also noticed its a VW motor. Does this mean I go to a VW dealership for parts? Is there any good online parts store that has stuff like this for a D24TIC? And the biggest question of all am I just wasting my time with this heap and its gonna be to much trouble and money to get it fixed and up to par?

I live in germany right now also and noticed german mechanics dont like working on old cars. If you consider a 93 old =(.

Thanks again everyone.

v/r
