I'd like to improve the fuel mileage of my '87 240 Wagon (stock AW-70 automatic) and I recently found an AW-70L transmission in a 740 GL. I believe that the 740 is either an '88 or '89 and I wanted to make sure that there aren't any issues or complicatons before I begin pulling the donor transmission. I read somewhere that the B230F engines may have had different output shafts with different splines, etc, and I'm curious if there is any truth to this rumor. If you are aware of any other possible problems, please post.

I'm hoping and praying that this conversion is possible. I thought that the later 240s came with Lockup, but after looking up service manual part numbers, I'm not entirely sure. Volvotechinfo.com specifies TP30868-2 (AW-70/AW-71) service manual for all 240 cars from '76 to '93. However, for the 740/760/780 cars they specify manuals TP31635-1 and TP31642-1 (both manuals cover the AW-70/70L and AW71/71L transmissions).

If anybody has performed this swap or researched this subject, please post. I'm interested to hear if there are problems. Also, if you know what cars and what years the AW-71L trannys were used, I would be interested. (I have yet to see one in person.)

Lastly, I know where to find a AW-72L on a non-running '89 16-valve 740 car (about a 4 hour drive away). Would this be worth looking into as opposed to the AW-70L?
