Engine Speed Indicator 200 1989

Hi folks,

Hope someone might recognize this problem's symptom and can recommend a solution.

My daughter's recently aquired '89 244 has been great, EXCEPT that the Engine Speed
Indicator seemed to have failed, or was malfunctioning

After guessing, with the help of the parts guy, what the most the most likely culprit could be, we bought a new Engine Speed Indicator from the Volvo dealer, for $75 (ouch) she started right up. Could have been the part, or a slight chance that something else was affected during installation. You never know.

Today, car dies, won't start, she calls me, after checking other stuff (after all, the Engine Speed
Indicator was new) I jiggle the flexible wire of the new Engine Speed Indicator, right where it enters the hard plastic mounting connector that mounts right above the flywheel, on the top
side of the bellhousing, and it starts up.

Dies again within 2-3 minutes of running, jiggle, starts again, dies within a minute, won't start with any amount of jiggling the Engine Speed Indicator wire.

The parts guy said he sold a LOT of these Engine Speed Indicators for the 240. Two on the morning we were there.

Is this a common problem part? Both the Volvo mechanic that suggested wiggling the wire and the parts guy seemed to have that opinion, from experience. I guess my question is, is there a solution better than just replacing with the standard replacement part? The connection seems to be a spot where manufacturing could produce a bad batch. I dunno? Is it something else I'm not familiar with.
