Rough idle when cold 700 1988

My 88 740 turbo idles roughly when the engine is cold. It starts promptly, once in a while it will stall within a few seconds, and then it will restart promptly. A couple of times.............but only rarely.........I have seen the speedometer needle jump while the car is sitting still.

I have read the FAQs which is a great help but I am trying to narrow down the possibilities before tearing into anything. From the FAQs, the two most likely possibilites seem to be dirty throttle body or faulty idle air control. Thanks in advance for all suggestions
