I picked up a '89 240 wagon for my daughter from a used car dealer. (My first, and probably my last time doing that). Multiple problems were cured by Rusty, our trusted Volvo mechanic. One problem I tackled myself was the speedo. It reads probably 80 when you're doing 55mph. The odo was broken anyway, so I decided that I'd just pick one up on ebay (rarely a problem... have bought parts for my volvos regularly with nary a glitch). I did, and popped it in. Great. Odo works fine, but speedo still reads fast, fast fast. I could understand slow, perhaps. It is an electronic speedo.
The "K9800" speedometer that was originally in the car when I got it was replaced with an identical unit. Go figure. The temp gauge reads low or no reading at all 90% of the time. Occasionally on start up for the first few miles after warm up I'll get a low reading with the temp. I swapped the temp gauge also.. the replacemen gauge shows the same reading as the original.
Is there a connection here, even though the speedo has a different plug? Could the ground be a problem? Or is it the circuit board itself? Or both sending units have failed... one for the speedo and one for the temp?
The speedo certainly behaves as if it's "geared" wrong.. but how could that be, if I'm certain the 9800 unit is the correct one for the 89 wagon?
Next step is to replace the whole instrument cluster. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated!
Thanks in advance,
Larry
