Below is a message from last week which Jim Holst was kind enough to give me some advice on.
I have a 91 240 SE. It was having trouble starting on damp days. I changed wires, plugs, rotor, air filter. Seemed to work until the car died on my wife. I discovered it had a blown fuel pump fuse. Replaced and it started. It now runs rough at idle. It accelerates fine with no hesitation but it seems to change idle as it decelerates. It revs then slows etc. I disconnected the air mass meter then reconnected and the car still ran so I assume it is not that. Could the AMM be on its way out? What other things should I check? fuel pump or fuel pump relay?
OK. Things have changed!!
Today I spent some time poking around the car to try to figure out why the fuel pump fuse #6 keeps blowing. I first checked the relay. I took it apart and it didn't seem to have any loose solder or loose wires. I also tried to hear the fuel pump. I put a hose to the tank and had my wife turn over the car. I think I heard a whirring sound but it wasn' t very loud. Went out to lunch, the blinkers were not working on the way, when I stopped I restarted the car , I may have jiggled the key a bit then the blinkers worked! (Just like a Volvo) Maybe unrelated but ...
Here's the clincher, when I got back from lunch the car would not start. Turned over but no start! Of course it had to be the fuel pump fuse I told my wife and screaming infant son, but NO!!!!!!
The car has been towed but I really want to have some idea of what's going on before my mechanic gouges me and replaces the entire fuel system. I suspect a short in the fuel pump circuit but I'm in a little over my head and I'm not sure how to find all (or any of) the grounds (and other things) that I should check on that circuit. My haynes manual is not a great help. I can sort of follow the wiring diagram but I'm not sure where to find everything. Any suggerstions as to resources that may help me?
I may give up and let my mechanic handle it but I at least would like to check the 25 amp fuse to the ECU that is supposed to be on the "left front wheel well next to the ignition coil". I looked and looked but could not find it!
Also I checked circuit # 6 a few days ago , I put an ammeter on with the fuse out and it measured resistance and the fuse was hot but today when the car died it registered no resistance and the fuse was cold. I jumped fuse 4 to 6 and I heard a buzzing from the rear of the wagon and the same when I jumped the FP relay.
The rough idle I mentioned in the original post seems to be only when cold.
Any help would be much appreciated. I have a soft spot for this car but my wife's running out of patience and I guess I am too.
Thanks, Joe
