A/C Clicking? 900 1992

940 1992 THis morning I heard a loud click in the engine. I looked under the hood and found the clicking coming from the A/C compressor. It sounds like a switch going on and off about every minute. I touched the A/C pipes and they did feel cold(I do not know if they are cold from weather or is A/C is on). I checked the A/C button and it was pressed in so I depressed and continued to hear the click. The heat was on and the setting was on low heat. Is this clicking on and off normal? Or is the alternator making that noise?
