740 engine ticking noise under load 700 1988

Trying to decide whether to buy the '88 740GLE wagon I just looked at (it's a 5-speed, otherwise I'd hold out for something in better shape) - when I revved the engine in neutral, it sounded fine. But when I drove it and accelerated hard, I heard a loud ticking noise from the engine compartment - the ticking was directly related to engine speed. It's a non-turbo 4-cylinder, 155k miles, everything looked visually ok under the hood and the car had plenty of power and ran smoothly. Could this be a valvetrain problem, or just an exhaust manifold leak? Anyone know what this is? I've never heard any of the numerous 240s I've driven make this noise. Thanks
