M47 vs M46; looking at a 'new' car, need advice, in Northern Ca. 200

Hi Boarders!

I'm going tonight to look at a '87 740 with my sister. She was told it has a five speed. The car has 186K on it, and we don't have any history (being sold through a wholesaler). $1,200/bo, rough around the edges.

I understand that the M47 is not as robust as the M46. What's the problem with them? Is it something that can be detected on a test drive?

The other contender is an '85 244GL, 198K on it. $1,500/bo, supposedly well maintained and in good shape.

Anything specific to look for? Rust isn't a problem, and I know to look for harness rot on the 240.

We're in northern CA, where prices for used cars tend to be higher than elsewhere...

Anyone within 40 miles of Santa Rosa, CA with a good 244 or 245 for sale cheap?

Thanks-
Kyle
