heater motor runs but were's the air 700 1990

I just bought this car knowing it had a few problems. One was the heater motor was bad. I replaced it with the 3 bolt GM motor and the first thing I thought was that the motor was running backwards. I could feel the speed changes but can't find the air. I pulled the motor out again to see it the heater core [or cooling coil, whichever is first] was clogged with leaves or whatever and it looks realy clean. There seems to be chicken wire or wire lathe under the inlet grates, but I can't see under that and I also can't see how the lathe can come out to make sure it is clear under it. At the heater control switch the A/C brings on the compressor and so does the defrost as I would expect. Any help appeicated.
