Leaky oil separator/block seal 900 1993

Anyone ever had a problem getting a good seal between the bottom of the oil separator, and the block? I had noticed some oily residue in that area, so this morning I pulled back the manifold and removed the box:

Yuck! I had pulled & degreased the separator about 10 months, 6500 miles ago... also fitted a new O-ring, which still looked pretty fresh today. I guess I may not have seated the box properly when reinstalling last time, though the oily mess just became apparent a few weeks ago.

I cleaned things up and put on a new O-ring before buttoning it up, and will check again in a bit. I should mention that pulling the separator & inspecting this area was much easier with the manifold unbolted. This was the first time I've had the mani off... not tough work at all.
