Change in 245 tail light lights? 200

Recently replaced a very beat up rear tail light lens with a newer one in excellent condition. When changing the wires I found that the lowest bulb and sockets were different. The older setup had 2 wires to the lowest bulb (and the common ground), and the bulb was a double filament type. (one filament being continuously on with the lights turned on and the second as the brake light)
The newer setup had only one wire (plus the common ground)and a single filament bulb. It was an easy fix to add the second wire and use the old socket and bulb.
Without really knowing, the only thing I could figure out is that ,in the newer 245, the brake light has been relocated higher for better visability (replacing the top red "fog" lamp, or does the single filament do "double duty" as a brake light also?
Both lenses(and the attached parts) are genuine Volvo per markings/
Thanks, Bruce
