'87 240 Timing Belt Broke 200 1987

My nephew called me tonight and said that a mechanic in Stevens Point, Wis. told him that when the timing belt broke on his 240 with the B230f engine, that it bent a couple of valves. I know I've heard here multiple times that this would not bend the valves, but what would the mechanic be using as his indicator to tell him that valves were bent? My nephew was driving down the road when the engine stopped suddenly. He had it towed to a garage where he was told that the timing belt broke, and after he had it replaced, the guy told him that the valves were bent. I'm going to scan the instructions for re-timing the crank/cam/distributor and email them to him. Any ideas on what else to look for? Thanks for the help.
