Growling fuel pump in B230E 700 1987

Some of you have wondered about noisy pumps - but has the reason ever been discovered?

My '87 B230E 745 has just caught the same bug.

The steady quiet humming sound of the pump sudenly turned into an irregular buzzing sound with vibration that can clearly be felt in the driver's seat. Like a swarm of bees.

By instinct, I replaced the pump with a new Bosch unit of correct type.
No change.
Then I fitted a new, original pressure accumulator (next to the pump)
No change.

Car has started to misfire occasionally when applying throttle at low rpm.
Pump is not a reliable starter anymore. Eventually it comes to life, though.
Up to this point, the car has been a sure starter for 340.000 km
Could it be the filter, the prepump, a leaky gas pipe - or?

Any ideas or past experience?

Thanks!
Claus W. Levinsen, Denmark
