Mercedes Diesel Defector? 200

I was talking with a fellow brickboarder tonight about diesels. My impression is that the consenus is negative about Volvo diesels. I read that Mercedes 300 diesels were excellent in terms of resale and durability. Does anyone have experience with diesels? I read FAQs and a few websites, which as I said, seem largely negative about diesels.
