Ok...1990 765 turbo. I have the garret T03 in place of the mitsu TD04, but i still had the problem before. 218k miles, just did the head, its within machining specs, took all the carbon off the pistons. The injectors are fairly new, the tune up is 5k miles old. The coolant temp and knock sensor are new, and properly torqued, i also made sure the harness was away from the alternator or any other possible interferance, the O2 is 1 year old and working properly. Under full throttle, or near full throttle, it will blow black smoke out the back, (enough so i can sometimes see it in a tinted window on a bright day) which i know is a possible vacuum leak, and have been over everything numerous times and there are no more leaks, even tested with a smoke machine. And it pings oddly enough consistantly, at 3500-4000 rpm. none before, none after all the way to about 5500 rpm. It runs like a bat outa hell too. new fuel pressure regulator, i still have to check the fuel pressure. I find it odd that it pings with a black smoke kinda fuel mixture, cause black smoke it obvoiusly was rich, but super rich cools off the combustion chamber, and therfore would reduce pinging. I checked the timing curve, 10-11 deg BTDC at idle, crack the throttle it goes to 18 i think it was, full advance seems to be 30 deg BTDC at about 2700 rpm, this is obviously not under load. Im thinkin a possible air mass meter, because if the consistancy of the ping in the rpm range. Ill figure it out eventually, though any input is most welcome, cause this is driving me nuts. Oh, this is a mototronic 2.4 system. The only other think besides the AMM I can think of is the fuel pressure possibly doing something real odd, or a dist cap possibly with carbon tracking...though that would be odd for 5k miles on a bosch cap. And its not so much the black smoke that im worried about, its the pinging, but maybe that related somehow. (*maybe*)

Ive converted this car to a manual though the same problems i had with the auto, im curious as to the neutral switch sending a signal to the ECU maybe to change fuel or timing maps when the car is in gear? it doesnt look that way, and i would think the system is too old, anyone know?
