Thanks to all re AC on 88 744ti 700

Hi gang-

Many thanks to all who've replied about the AC on our prospect 744ti. To rehash, the car is really nice, 257K miles, frozen AC clutch, no belts.

It's a rather interesting set of circumstances. I have a buddy who owns a AC-etc shop, and has commented with our 90 744ti with a leaky compressor SEAM :-( that we're probably looking at $1,000 to replace the rec/dry, compressor, lines, etc. Probably better off feeding it R12 every year... well, that only lasted about two weeks, so we'll be revisiting the situation :-)

Anywho - the seller, who used to run a Volvo shop, when asked about the AC, said, oh, a compressor, that's $40, plus some labor and R134a (already converted, that's probably what lunched the compressor in the first place). Call it $150, sez he. Well, when working on details of a deal, he got much less sure of the cost to get it working, saying, well, for $150 I'll get a compressor and refrigerant in it, and then you're on your own.

Much easier to reconcile the two "expert" opinions...

Just out of curiosity, is it possible/likely that the AC system is intact, and the clutch is all that's bad? Should the compressor and frozen clutch be turnable by hand?

I'll have to have a heart-to-heart with my sister about how important AC is in a gold car, with a tan interior, power windows, and sunroof. My wife got along okay in her red/black model. But then again, she's one of those superwoman types:-)

Thanks again, and God bless the Brickboard!!
