cooling system operation question 200

My recently purchased '89 240 , on an initial start after it has been sitting,
will quickly heat up within ten minutes . The coolant temperature gauge will
stop at about 3/4 of the way up the gauge and then settle down within a couple
of minutes. The normal operating range is about halfway to a little above
halfway on the coolant temp. gauge. Is this normal cooling system operation? Any thoughts would be apreciated. Thanks.
