strut mounts... what's the deal? 700 1988

All right guys... what's the deal with strut mounts? How do I tell if they are bad? I own an 88 740GLE with over 240K miles... I don't hear any clunking when I turn the wheel or anything... the front struts are bad (at least I think so) and I want to do a front susp R/R... strut inserts, ball joints, tie rods, control arm bushings, etc.

But, all of the FAQ say to replace the strut mounts while I'm at it. And I'm told NOT to use ScanTech parts...

So how can I tell if my current strut mounts are bad? Can I repair the ones I have instead of buying new (@ $99 apiece)?

What is so important about the strut mount that it has to be replaced?

thanks in advance.

Mike
