U-Joint U-doo voodoo 444-544

I have replaced many u-joints using a bench vice. The press fit of the caps is light and a bench vice works quite well. A hydraulic press is overkill and not as easy to manipulate as bench vice (or an arbor vice). I would never hammer them out and in. Re-balancing is not necessary.

I remove the snap rings and use a nut or socket to press one cap in far enough to push the other cap out. It is pretty simple.

The rear u-joint on 544s fails before the others. It has to take the counter-rotation of the rear axle, and the rubber blocks which prevent the rear axle from turning didn't have a long life even when the cars were new.
