I have a 1987 240 DL wagon with 120K miles. When purchased, the car had a sputtering/stalling problem. The details of this problem are:
Problem 1: Sputtering
(a) The car will run fine and then seem to loose gas, and progressively sputter to the point of stalling if the car is not turned off
(b) The longer the car is turned off, the less likely the problem will occur again soon.
(c) The problem seems to occur after driving at least 10 miles
(d) The problem occurs intermittently (once every few days)
At the advice of my mechanic, I had both fuel pumps replaced and the problem seemed to be fixed. However, the problem came backe a few weeks later and also developed another problem.
Problem 2: No cold idle
(a) Upon cold-start, car would stall unless given gas for a few minutes
(b) Car will idle without stalling after warmed up.
Assuming problems 1 and 2 were related, I replace the original air mass meter with a used part. Upon replacement, problem 2 was immediately eliminated and problem 1 seemd to be fixed as well. However, now a few weeks after the replacement of the air mass meter, problem 1 (sputtering/stalling) is still occuring.
I'm thinking that either the AMM I purchased isn't in great shape or there is some other problem that is causing the sputtering. If anyone has any ideas/advice, they'd be GREATLY appreciated. This is my first Volvo and though I love it, I'm a bit concerned that it won't become the dependable vehicle that I hoped it could be. Thanks.
