Gas grade for b230f 200

My 1992 with automatic knocks on anything less than premium. The timing can't be off--it's set by the crank sensor.
For local driving I can use plus, but when I get on the interstate I guess the cylinder head temps go up a bit and I can't even ease up a hill with a light foot on the gas without some noticeable knocking--so any time I'm heading out of town I have to put in premium.

Is this normal? Seems to me others have mentioned using regular. My 1980 is usually ok on regular except during the summer. Is there a compression difference, or is it the injection system?

hmmmmm. Shouldn't the knock sensor retard the timing to control this? Does knocking mean I have a bad knock sensor?

The car has 205k. I got it at 163k and it's always needed at least plus grade. It starts and runs fine otherwise, summer and winter.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Doug
