HELP,ATE caliper piston size, no stamp ID 700 1991

I need to change my rear calipers, rotors etc. I pulled a caliper but w/o removing the piston seal it is impossible to get an actual piston diameter. Is there anyway to determine the piston size w/o pulling the seal or using the casing ID stamp (too corroded to tell).

Is there enough difference in brake action among the available sizes (36,38,40) to warrent exact caliper replacement?
1991 740 Turbo wgn 5sp. w/ ABS ATE calipers, non-vented rotors 280mm dia.

Thank in advance
